Beginners Guide To Writing A Movie Review

Most of us love watching movies. But before selecting a movie to watch, we go through so many reviews or comments about the same in order to make sure the movie is worth our time and money.

As new bloggers, many of us look forward to writing our very own movie reviews on our blogs or websites. It all seems pretty easy until you actually start writing a movie review. The problem that arises is that most of us aren't aware of what is to be written and what is to be skipped.

The biggest mistake that newbie bloggers make while writing a movie review is that they end up discussing the whole plot of the movie including the spoilers. Although there is no harm in writing the whole plot or the spoilers, readers usually prefer otherwise.

Over the years and after going through lots of feedback from my readers and fellow bloggers, I have learned from my mistakes. Yet, I believe I still have a long way to go. I will be sharing a beginners guide to writing a movie review which I have personally found very helpful.

Here is what to include in a critical movie review:-

1) Basic Information

Firstly, include the basic information about the movie. This refers to the name of the movie, the genre, the actors, the director, the production house, release date etc. You can also include a trailer for the movie here.

2) The Story In Brief

Cover the whole story in brief. Make sure you keep it in short and don't give away any major plot points. If in case you feel like writing the main plot or the spoilers, mention a disclaimer in advance. Don't let your story go on and on for many paragraphs and pages.

3) Your Opinion On The Story

Talk about your feelings based on the story. If you feel the plot was very predictable or quite intriguing write your view on the same. Highlight the positive and negative aspects of the story and give your feedback on how it could have been different.

4) Talk about Casting and The Actors

This is one of my favorite parts. The cast plays an important role in bringing the story to life. A good cast can make the movie whereas a bad cast can break the movie. Mention what you feel. If you felt that the casting of the movie was not appropriate, you can give your own view on who should've been cast instead of the current actors.

5) Talk about the Directing

Most of the bloggers skip this step which I don't feel is right. The way a movie is directed plays an important role in its success. The director has a key role in choosing the cast members, production design, and the creative aspects of filmmaking. S/He is responsible for every visual aspect of the film.

6) Talk about soundtracks and music

For a film to be a box office hit good songs are unavoidable. Music can serve several purposes that are either important on the emotional side of the movie or help/enhance the storytelling. It is of vital importance to stress the positive aspects of the music that is being reviewed.

7) Talk about the editing

Editing and special effects are what defines the movies these days. Most of the time, the movie editing is spot on but sometimes it's basically meh! Take some time out to highlight the way the movie was edited.

8) Your view about the publicity or promotions

There are few movies which generate quite the hype but fail to impress the audience. Some good movies come and go by and no one ever notices. The way the movie is promoted plays a great role in its earnings as well as ratings. Share your views on the same.

9) What you liked

Most importantly, don't forget to mention what you liked about the movie. This can be one of the above points or something totally different.

10) What you didn't like

No movie is perfect for everyone. There may be something that really upset you or something that you would have preferred some other way. Share your opinions on what part or factor of the movie you didn't like.

11) The message you got

Every time the audience leaves the theatre, they take away a message with them. Share what message you received from the movie.

12) Overall rating

Lastly and most importantly, rate the movie. You can rate it on a scale of 1 to 5 stars or any other way as you like. Share your overall recommendations.

Writing a movie review is not that difficult. All it needs is a plan and a systematic arrangement. Did you enjoy reading this post? Share your thoughts on the same.
